Description Among the three essential dimensions of the Christian faith—doctrine, morals and worship—the most difficult to teach effectively is doctrine. “doctrine” here refers only to the saving truths of the creed, as distinct from morals (commandments, virtues) and worship (sacraments). After an introduction focusing on specific current problems in teaching doctrine, the article proposes a three-step approach: first, on the Reality/Nature of christian faith (faith and reason, paradoxes of faith); second, a Theological Sketch of doctrine’s Role in faith (showing its unity/coherence, hierarchy and development and  interpretation/relevance); and thirdly, on Types, language, functions and limitations of the creeds. finally, some brief conclusions for the religious educator are added.
